Although widely associated with grunge music, the band's sound incorporates heavy metal and acoustic elements. Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released three studio albums, three EPs, two live albums, four compilations, and two DVDs. The band is known for its distinct vocal style which often included the harmonized vocals of Staley and Cantrell.

Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. The band was one of the most successful music acts of the 1990s, selling over 17 million albums worldwide, including 14 million in the United States alone. The band achieved two number-one Billboard 200 albums (Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains), 11 top ten singles on the Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, and six Grammy Award nominations.

Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity due to Layne Staley's problems with substance abuse, culminating in his death in 2002. Alice in Chains reunited in 2005 and as of 2009 have finished recording their first studio album in 14 years with new lead vocalist William DuVall. The album, Black Gives Way to Blue, is due for release on September 29, 2009, via Virgin/EMI.</value></property><property><name>genre</name><value>Alternative metal, alternative rock, grunge, heavy metal</value></property></properties><type>ORGANIZATION</type></entity><entity score="0.11262015" id="110487" href="/organization/drowning-pool-0x1af97"><facets><facet count="0"><name>Band</name></facet></facets><name>Drowning Pool</name><properties><property><name>wikipedia_paragraph</name><value>Drowning Pool is a four-piece hard rock band that was formed in 1996 in Dallas, Texas, United States. Schonberg left the band after they had recorded a couple of demo tapes. Russ Bartlett then moved from drums to vocals. They featured various drummers before finding Dan Peters. Hopper later left the band and was replaced by Jamie Lane, whom met Kurt Danielson at the University of Washington. In 1986, Russ Bartlett left the band to pursue a solo career. Jamie Lane then took up vocals and guitar. The band recorded demo tapes and passed them on to fans at their shows and fellow Seattle bands, such as Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and The Melvins. In 1988, the band split up to go separate ways. Kurt Danielson formed his new band Tad with former drummer Tad Doyle. Dan Peters became drummer in a somewhat-short lived local band project called Feast, which disbanded shortly after he joined. After Feast broke up, Peters met up with Mark Arm and Steve Turner to form Mudhoney. In 2000, Bundle of Hiss re-released an old demo tape on Loveless Records called Sessions-1986-88.</value></property><property><name>genre</name><value>Heavy metal</value></property><property><name>genre</name><value>Grunge</value></property><property><name>genre</name><value>Hard rock</value></property></properties><type>ORGANIZATION</type></entity><entity score="0.005257704" id="84414" href="/organization/crossfade-0x149be"><facets><facet count="0"><name>Band</name></facet></facets><name>Crossfade</name><properties><property><name>wikipedia_paragraph</name><value>Crossfade is a post-grunge/hard rock band from Columbia, South Carolina. Crossfade attracted the interest of the Los Angeles, California A&amp;R company Taxi (Independent A&amp;R), which ultimately led to the signing of a record deal with the Earshot division of Columbia Records. They released their first full-length self-titled album on April 13, 2004 and their latest album, &quot;Falling Away&quot;, released on August 29, 2006, with Columbia Records.
